"For 18 years I taught Nalini Method to classes full of New Yorkers on the Upper West Side. I’m proud to have supported thousands of adults on their journey to physical and emotional wellness. And I'm grateful that this experience inspired me to create NaliniKIDS, an education nonprofit, that brings the same Nalini focus on movement and reflection to students."

NaliniKIDS

As a fitness instructor, I saw firsthand that encouraging my clients to work through their emotions while working out resulted in strengthening their bodies and minds. They were more confident, empowered, and energized. Seeing how valuable combining physical and emotional awareness was for adults inspired me to create NaliniKIDS — why not start fully connecting at an earlier age?

In 2009, NaliniKIDS was born. NaliniKIDS helps students make a healthy physical and emotional connection to themselves, so they can be engaged in learning and positively impact their community.

Nalini is the Hindu word for lotus. It is also my mother, Nalini Mehta's namesake.

The lotus flower starts small, growing from the bottom of a pond, pushing through mud and muck. As it slowly rises above the water, the lotus remains unsoiled.

Only when it reaches the surface does the lotus bud begin to blossom and turn into a beautiful flower.

So when it came time to name my business, calling it Nalini was an obvious choice. Not only did it honor the journey of the lotus flower, it was named after one of the healthiest people I know, my mom.

I wanted to create a fitness community that emanated the feeling I had around my mom — a feeling of being accepted, encouraged, nurtured, and challenged. I thought that if others could experience even a little of what I was blessed with growing up that the world would be a better place.
